Purpose
This document is to serve as a guide to organizers of NCD race series events to ensure a shared understanding of the minimum expectations regarding NCD Series Events. Specific questions and concerns should be directed to the NCD Director High Performance.
Objectives of the Race Series
The NCD has coordinated this series for over 25 years, with well over 1000 participants annually. The intent of the series is to have low-key, low stress events as a way to expose both skiers and clubs to racing. The race series has the following objectives:
· Provide opportunities for local area skiers to participate in a number of different race events around the region, with a variety of race formats in a low-key environment.
· Provide opportunities for clubs to develop the capacity to run races, by providing the needed equipment and low-key environment.
· Provide a means to motivate skiers and clubs by awarding points and celebrating our local skiers – both Ontario and Quebec
Race Expectations
The NCD has a very minimal set of expectations for race organizers regarding the series. These expectations are as follows:
1. Races will have a published race notice and published results
2. The published results will follow the NCD Year of Birth (YOB) and Category guidelines and are sent to the NCD HP Rep one week after the conclusion of the event.
3. Registration for the event is open minimum two weeks prior to the event date.
4. NCD series events are low-fluoro (LF) events (unless sanctioned by another higher level body). Meaning the expectation is that race participants will NOT use High-fluoro (HF) or medium-fluoro (MF) waxes, including HF or MF powders, pucks, blocks and liquids. This includes the use of cold weather powder additives & hardeners. While we know that race organizers cannot enforce this directive, please include it in all race notices.
Fees
The NCD charges race organizers fees for equipment use and a per participant fee to cover the direct costs of the race series – equipment maintenance, and series awards. These fees are kept as low as possible to minimize race costs, however there are real costs to offering the race series and these fees allow us to just break-even.
· Equipment rental fee: Minimum $50 to a maximum of $200 depending on number of participants
· Race series fee: $1 per local participant eligible to receive an award
Categories
In keeping aligned with the long term athlete development model, the NCD Race series will be using YOB for race series awards for the younger participants and race categories for the older age groups. The following table outlines the race series awards groupings..

Note that the categories have been renamed for the 2020 season to align with the Nordiq Canada competition model and should not conflict with provincially or nationally sanctioned races (e.g. OCups, Coupe de Quebec, Norams). Any provincially or nationally sanctioned event will use the race categories as defined by the sanctioning party.
Race organizers should align race distances by YOB category, in consultation with local coaches.
NCD Race Series Schedule
The NCD race schedule, race distances and formats will be coordinated by the NCD HP Rep. The NCD HP Rep will start planning the race series once the National and at least one provincial calendar are confirmed, usually in the summer. At that time clubs only need to indicate interest in being part of the series, race format and tentative dates.
Once the National, Ontario and Quebec calendars are finalized (mid September) each club should provide their preferred date, distances and format to the HP rep by Oct 1.
The race Schedule will be finalized and posted no later than Nov 15th. The Draft schedule will be available on the NCD site as soon as draft dates are identified, the schedule will be updated regularly.
Race Notices
The race notice is a critical communications tool that is necessary to assist with increasing and improving overall awareness of the NCD race series events, and ensuring that race participants know what to do.
Race notices for each event must:
· Contain the date, location and proposed initial start time.
· Advise participants and coaches of the LF Event directive… NCD series events are low-fluoro (LF) events (unless sanctioned by another higher level body). Meaning the expectation is that race participants will NOT use High-fluoro (HF) or medium-Fluoro (MF) glide waxes, including HF or MF powders, pucks, blocks and liquids. · Contain a Course Map – with elevation changes if possible
Race Notices should be posted in both French and English a minimum of three weeks prior to the event.
The race notice must be sent to the NCD HP rep to ensure it can be posted on the NCD site.
Points
Individual Awards
Individuals participating in the race series will accumulate points as follows:
1. A separate report for each age and gender category will provide the detailed points standings by athlete
2. Points are awarded on the basis of 15 points for first place, 13 for second place and 11 for third place, finishers from fourth place to thirteenth place will receive one less point each (10,9,8,etc), all finishers after twelfth place receive 1 point each.

3. The top ‘n’ race results count towards individual rankings, for each age group this number depends on both the number of races in the series and the number of races cancelled, if any. The number of races to count is defined in the following table. Ideally, for the planned races in the 2020 season, a skier’s best 6 will be counted, assuming no cancellations.

4. Only registered NCD and Outaouais clubs and skiers will accrue NCD points
5. Skiers who enter in races in more than one age category cannot combine points across categories, skiers accrue points in the categories/YOB they have entered.
6. A tie for any position in a particular race results in equal points being awarded, and the next level of points being dropped.
7. In the case of a tie for and NCD award, athletes with equal points are awarded the same placing, and the award at the next level is dropped.
8. Team Relay Point Rules
a. Points are awarded to each member of the team in the same manner as individual races.
b. Points are awarded for the category raced, if a skier races with a skier of an older age, that team will be deemed to be in the older age category.
9. Sprint Race Scoring – for events that have a timed qualification, the NCD points will be awarded by placing in the qualification time.
Awards Ceremony
The NCD race series and all local skiers will be celebrated at the annual NCD race series awards banquet. All local skiers and clubs are invited to make this event an annual celebration of local skiing.
Awards will be given to:
1. The top three individuals that have the highest aggregate point totals in each category or YOB. Individual awards consist of medals, gifts and skiers name engraved on the category trophy
AGREEMENT
As an organizer of an NCD race series event I ________________ (name of contact) agree to meet the following expectations:
___ – Race notice provided to HP Rep and posted at least three weeks in advance of the event.
___ – Race registration will open at least two weeks prior to the event.
___ – Race categories follow the NCD Categories, or we have received approval from the NCD HP rep to deviate
___ – Race results will be posted and sent to the NCD HP Rep within one week of the conclusion of the event
___ – Race series fees will be paid at the end of the event
